Commencement 2010!!
His precise speech, only 15 mins, Mr Wong Ah Long to Graduation Students (to my brother not to me :P) of Commencement 2010. But actually valuable for life time.
Just rewrite for what I've learnt and my own reflections.
1) One should have mentor whom you admired, i.e. "God father". For him, Mr Obama is his god father, why? Differences in his strategy with former one, he value his skills on negotiations and people focus. That's why he is becoming Nobel Laureate even less than one year after elected as President.
The only thing need to think about is "Does Mr Obama know him?" If he want Mr Obama know him, the answer is "do social work"
I use to have at least one god father whichever organizations I have worked, I assisted them in anyway as well as learnt from them. Still missing them. But here, where is my god father?
2) His second notes was "Jump out of the box!" He was told this by his boss while he was working for big firm as higher post. Firstly, he thought he has been mistaken. After two or three times he was told this, he was explained.
"What is the difference between 'Think' and 'Jump'?"
'Think' is just only imagination and must followed by actions otherwise it can be delayed even for years.
'Jump' related to movement for now.
That's why instead of thinking only you need to jump out of the box.
My present lecturer told one of my classmate that it was time to move another organization to explore more experiences after working 4 years for existing organization. For me also, it's time to jump out of my current box. Only problem is which side of box!!!! Coming 23 Jul 10 news will be the answer for me.
3) His third points was "Knowledge is Power", that has been know for several hundreds of years and still useful for human life.
Yes, people have their own choice for life. "Only to get fish or to know how to catch fish" At present, I'm learning the method of fishing but I feel like instead of learning at the pond, I'm learning it on the hill :(..... where is my pond to fish with my knowledge..
Anyway, thank you Mr Wong Ah Long for enlighten me within short time. This hall is celebrating commencement for graduate students. In my mind, I am celebrating commencement for my new way of life.
Me & "Pigeon Hole"
It was 1996, when I've started my first job at a Swiss owned travel industry after graduated. I was introduced with it, "Pigeon Hole". That is the big cupboard with many chambers which documents are slotted in it with respective categories. We have put client's personal case files inside month by months. About nine to ten Europeans and twenties local staff members were using it as a mean of communication system. If you want to know about one client, you can straight away go and see in their case file in it. I found it plays as a major role in communication and it's quite effective and time saving.
After that I was working for an Australian non-government organization, about eighty staff members have been used it with respective personal names as well as project office names from different states and divisions. You have to check your chamber everyday for any incoming and outgoing things including letters and some small materials. Even communicates with staff members from project offices without wasting time while communications was not widely accessible to some project offices at that time.
After knowing it's usefulness, I have introduced it in project office for one organization while I was involved in setting up the office new state and also in another organization while establishing new department for their head office. It was quite useful so far till at that time.
Recently, I have done again one in the new company, my aim was to sort the paper in their categories so that everybody can work smoothly. It also help me to save more time for my work as they can directly come and access it whenever they want. Boss accepted my idea and introduced it in one corner of company nearby my working desk. I don't know weather they are not knowing about it's usefulness......... First month, second month, third month..... they only ask me to put and take their papers from this "Pigeon Hole" and no changes in their repeated problem for losing papers ........finally............instead of saving my time on keeping documents....... I feel like I am becoming like a sales Clark from Chinese traditional medicine shop....... Instead of searching themselves, they straight away come to me and asking me keeping and taking their documents...... :(
